It's best to start planning for #GivingTuesday early.
#GivingTuesday started in 2012 to balance the rampant commercialism of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. It's an opportunity for consumers and businesses alike to remember the less fortunate in the world and to join together to give back in meaningful ways. This year, #GivingTuesday is on December 1st. It's best start planning early and that's why you should join us for the Twitter chat about it on August 28th at 1 pm EST. After the chat, at 2 pm, will be a social hour wherein everyone can talk amongst themselves. Join the community at
#SM4NP, our biweekly Twitter chat.
We've invited our partners and experts to share resources, advise and more with our community. We are excited to have the following featured guests:
Kait Sheridan, Director of Partnerships & Programs,
92Y (#GivingTuesday)
David Gunn, Political Accounts Manager,
Salsa
Rob Wu, CEO,
CauseVox

Working in the nonprofit sector is essentially doing a lot with very little. I always have more than I can do and far fewer resources. Personally, I oversee and produce between 12-20 live programs and conferences in thirteen cities in three countries, I speak at 6-10 conferences, and I organize around 30 digital programs every year. There are hundreds of people I communicate with that are our stakeholders- from sponsors, attendees, partners, and media to vendors and venues. I rarely endorse or write about technology providers. I try to be platform neutral, but in this series, I am going to share with you all my top tools and how I use them to do more with less. Friends don’t hide resources and the secret of their success from friends! So here we go!

The following is a guest post from Joshua Schukman of WonderWe.
The first thing anyone will tell you as you craft your social media presence is that you have to have content to share. From blogs, to photos, to videos, there’s really no end to the different types of content you’ll be encouraged to produce. We non-profiters are used to telling stories and creating content, but the internet is now so saturated that it can be hard to get heard above the noise. That’s why I want to challenge the notion that content is king.

The following is a guest post from the Liz Deering of 121Giving, based on data that Social Media for Nonprofits helped compile.
Nonprofits are in the business of solving problems – human, social, environmental, educational, disaster relief and others. But many nonprofits are losing ground by not applying the best practices or using the technologies that create measurable and high-impact success across the business sector.
Our recently co-published report, “The Business of Nonprofits: New Approaches and Thinking About Fundraising,” uses survey results from nonprofit agencies to look at the challenges that arise when nonprofits do not embrace the tried-and-true business practices and technologies that have proven their value in the for-profit marketplace. This month’s topic
This month will be the last #M4NP Twitter chat under that name. Don't fret- we're not sunsetting our Mobile for Nonprofits initiative, but we are going to host our biweekly twitter chats under the same hashtag- #SM4NP. We don't want to dilute our audience, message, or reach by using two hashtags, so will stick to our branded hashtag in the future.
So join us for our last #M4NP Twitter chat on mobile email for nonprofits on Monday, July 27th at 1-2 pm EST. Because mobile makes the web more immediate, nonprofits can harness support more quickly. We'll be exploring best practices for nonprofit emails in a mobile web, including how nonprofits can harness that immediacy for change. (more…)

This month’s topic
This month at the vibrant #SM4NP, the digital community will gather to talk storytelling for nonprofits. In their communications, nonprofits focus too much on how they do things, their theory of change and what actions they take to accomplish their mission but far less about how they've made a change or accomplished the outcome like fed the hungry, clothed the poor, passed laws to prevent animal cruelty and saved thousands of chickens or provided dignity to homeless through baths and haircuts. Gaining Influence: Power Tips for Power Users of Social Media
Nonprofits, listen up: this month’s #SM4NP tackles how to use social media to gain influence. On June 12th at 1pm EST, we will be discussing power tips for power users of social media, especially insights gained from Guy Kawasaki’s book The Art of Social Media. This discussion is in anticipation of the Leadership Salon we are hosting in July with Guy Kawasaki. In that way, this knowledge will extend through our other educational outlets in order to reach the most nonprofit organizations.

Social media is a powerful tool at nonprofits’ disposal, and more and more are taking it seriously and making use of its advantages. By using this tool effectively, you'll be able to stand out from the crowd and create awareness for the impact you create. But in order to really get the most out of social media, you’ve got to catch the public’s eye and develop a robust and interactive audience that is continuously growing. (more…)

Those in the nonprofit sector do what we do because we want to make a difference in the world. We’re not looking for accolades or awards, but we recognize that in order to be effective we need to catch the attention of others who share our vision, care about our cause, and can make meaningful contributions to move our efforts forward.
